Website Police: Yahoo’s makeover

Yahoo suffered greatly over time because of its competitor, Google, but it seems that the Y! team is willing to step up and leapfrog the competition. At least that’s what they hoped when their newly revamped inbox was announced with pomp on their 16th anniversary. Truth be told, the users’ were more annoyed than impressed.

This is how it looks now:

No need for a closer look to notice the resemblance with Google. There are a lot of elements, from looks to functionality, that were almost cloned in the new Y! Inbox. The users’ community blame CEO Marissa Mayer for this, as she worked for Google in the past. Moreover, the community states: “If we wanted Google, we would have used Google”.

Here are some of the grievances of the community:

– The tabs are gone. This was one of Yahoo’s most loved feature.

– Grouped messages. Again, if people wanted a Google-like experience, they would have migrated ages ago.

– The collapsable sidebar. If the user set up filters, it’s a lot more complicated to read the categorised messages.

– The “save drafts” button is missing.

– The formatting toolbar is no longer where it was.

– Users want to be able to choose sorting by newest first.

– Pop-up sender’s address on hover. This feature proved itself really useful for dealing with spammers who use popular names.

– There is no sorting by sender.

And this is just an excerpt of the first page on Yahoo’s Uservoice platform. There are 7216 pages in total.
