Who is John Clang and what’s his connection with Skype?
John Clang is a visual artist from Singapore. He shares his time between New York and Singapore and exhibits his works in museums from all across the world. You are probably still wondering what he has to do with Skype and why do you have to read about him on our blog.
Actually, Clang started in 2010 a unique and original series of family portraits using Skype. His family was the first one to experiment the live recording and projecting for the exhibition that was eventually named Being Together and exposed in the National Museum of Singapore in January 2013.
Thanks to his work, Skype started a campaign called Stay Together meant to use the same technology while focusing on its positive impact in everyday life. After all, Skype is the most used tool that keeps lovers, friends and family connected in spite of the long distances.
And how are the portraits made?
It is quite simple actually; a regular Skype video call is combined with a digital projection. This way the members of the family that live at a long distance from the person making or receiving the call can all pose for a picture together, a thing that would otherwise be utterly impossible.
Emphasizing the fact that distance should not be a problem in keeping relationships alive; Skype showed that a tech company can pay attention to things that really matter. Luckily, nowadays, we can enjoy apps and tools that can bring the family together even if every member lives in a different part of the world.
