No matter how experienced a web designer is, getting a mental block happens can happen t anyone. Sometimes, all the good ideas are fighting to come out of your head and onto the screen or paper, but there are those times when you find yourself staring at a sea of white, not having the slightest clue on where to start.
Why does it happen?
One of the greatest creative blockers is fear. The fear of not delivering a perfect design, of not being good enough. For many designers, their anxiety levels rise when having to pitch or present a new concept. Another reason could be the project itself, which can be out of your comfort zone.
What you do have to understand however, is that this is something normal and it happens to a lot of us.
How can you deal with it?
There are a few tips and tricks that worked for others, so we are going to share them with you, hoping they will help you as well:
Take a break. Oddly enough, taking a break is actually a crucial step. Get your head out of the game for a while. Forcing yourself to come up with brilliant ideas will most likely lead to a mediocre result.
Find inspiration. There is nothing wrong in taking a look at other designer’s work. No, we’re not saying you should copy anything, but you could find the inspiration you need. You could also use websites like Designspiration.
When working, eliminate distractions. With so many distractions around us, it’s sometimes close to impossible to concentrate. A notification on your phone, a new pop-up in the task manager, a muffin on the desk – all these things become a lot more interesting when you are trying to concentrate.
Allow yourself time to think. Trying to come up fast with a great idea might lead to having no idea at all. Take a deep breath and allow yourself to think. After you inked the concept in your mind, you’ll see that transposing it onto the screen/paper will take very little time.
